THIS [AI] SHIFT [MAY] BE COMING FASTER THAN YOU THINK

Edition 037

Our featured article either offers a behind-the-scenes look at what we’re up to at Empower or provides a fresh lens on how to grow, operate or think differently about business.

THE AI SHIFT ISN’T COMING. IT’S HERE.

My mental model has shifted.

Well, if I’m honest, it shifted several months ago, but the proof points keep building, so I’m going to say it plainly:

AI is no longer optional. It’s actively reshaping how businesses grow, compete and serve. Teams of all sizes are making it core to how they operate, and leaders are openly demanding that employees adapt to AI-first.

Executives at large tech organizations like Fiverr, Duolingo and Shopify have all gone public (or been leaked) on the topic. While each message was nuanced, the shared belief is clear:

Becoming AI-first is how they’re planning to win and remain relevant.

Beyond big tech, I’ve heard the same themes at local events.

Soundbites from last week alone:

  • 39% of skills will change in the next five years.

  • The AI shift from tool to teammate is here.

  • Inertia is dangerous. Take one step forward.

  • The barrier to information is going through the floor.

  • Conversations about your business are already happening. Do you want in?

  • Optimizing for AI agents as “customers” will matter.

  • The new buyer journey ≠ the old selling journey.

The 2024 line was: “AI won’t take your job. A person using AI will.”

The stakes have changed. As Fiverr CEO Micha Kaufman put it:

It does not matter if you are a programmer, designer, product manager, data scientist, lawyer, customer support rep, salesperson, or a finance person — AI is coming for you.

This is a movement about readiness, reinvention and adaptability. We’re in the process of rewiring how we work, build our companies and best leverage our human expertise.

Staying in your comfort zone isn’t a strategy. Things are moving too quickly, and others will capture the opportunity.

What does this mean for you?

If you’re a startup founder, small business owner or creative:

  • Redesign workflows: Where are the choke points? Can AI effectively and accurately streamline them?

  • Re-think the Org Chart: Roles are evolving. Your future team may include both humans and AI agents.

  • Establish AI governance: Set expectations for appropriate AI usage. Put checks and balances in place to reduce misuse.

  • Reskill your people: Not everyone needs to prompt like a pro, but everyone must be AI-literate. Do your part and give them the tools to learn.

  • Enhance the customer experience: AI can increase personalization and responsiveness. Review your customer journey through this lens and see what you uncover.

  • Unlock data: AI can drive deeper insights and faster decision-making, but only when the data inputs are clean and well-connected.

  • Reinforce a culture of innovation: Encourage your team to experiment and present new ideas.

I’m not here to say AI is perfect or all “good.” I’ve experienced its flaws firsthand. But I’m still in the game, and learning. That’s what counts.

Five ways to take action

OK, time for the part where I offer solutions. Five suggestions to take the next step:

  • AI Audit: Inventory your tools. Is AI embedded already? What’s your team using under the radar?

  • Ask ChatGPT (or [insert other LLM]): Don’t know where to begin? Ask. Seriously. Describe your business, customers, workflows, and systems in a prompt. You might be surprised by what these tools surface.

  • Pick one thing: Try meeting notes, email drafts, content generation. Start small, low stakes and build in guardrails so AI doesn’t go wild.

  • Experimentation over perfection: Just get started. You don’t need a master plan, but you absolutely need to explore.

  • Read: A few newsletters on my inbox that help me stay up-to-date include Ben’s Bites, Every, The Neuron.

A quick closing message

Many of you may already be well on your way to building real outcomes with AI. In that case, you’re on the path.

If you’re earlier in the journey: Audit, test, learn and keep moving. You don’t need to overhaul everything today. Take the first steps. See where they lead.

A peek into another entrepreneurial journey. The wins, challenges, pivots and lessons.

MEET SAMANTHA GOLD, FOUNDER & CEO OF MOTETTE

Q: When did you know you were destined to build a business?
A: “I knew from a young age that I was destined to build a business—long before I had a product or a plan. I was the kid organizing lemonade stands with branded signs and upsells, always dreaming up ideas and ways to make them better. That entrepreneurial spirit never left me—it just evolved as I gained experience in tech and fashion, and ultimately came full circle when I became a mom and saw a real need in the market I couldn’t ignore.”

Q: What’s the most unexpected thing (+/-) that’s happened along your entrepreneurial journey?
A: “One of the most unexpected—and meaningful—parts of my entrepreneurial journey has been the growth of my inner circle of moms. What started on a whim, just asking a few fellow moms for input on prints and styles, has organically evolved into a community of over 1,500 women who now help me co-create the brand. Their feedback has shaped everything from our product designs to our messaging, and building Motette with them has been one of the most powerful and rewarding surprises of all.”

Q: When did you hit your first scaling challenge, and how did you overcome it?
A: “I hit my first real scaling challenge right after our initial launch—when we nearly sold out of our debut collection faster than expected. I realized quickly that demand was outpacing our inventory and systems, and I had to shift from founder mode to operator mode overnight. I overcame it by tightening production timelines, expanding our manufacturing capacity, and leaning on my experience in tech and fashion to streamline operations—all while staying deeply connected to the moms who helped build the brand from day one.”

Q: If you were starting all over, what’s one piece of advice you would give yourself?
A: “If I were starting all over again, I’d remind myself to have courage in the unknown and trust the process—even when the path isn’t clear. The truth is, clarity rarely comes before action. It comes from doing the work, listening, adjusting, and simply showing up every day. Take it step by step, task by task, and don’t get caught up in the pressure to have everything figured out. When you keep moving forward with intention and consistency, momentum builds—and that’s where the real growth happens. It’s not about knowing exactly where you’re going; it’s about trusting that each small step is leading you exactly where you’re meant to be.”

Q: A fun one, what’s your all-time favorite restaurant, and where is it located?
A: Le Colonial, Chicago”

A PROMPT TO INSPIRE ACTION

Remember earlier when I said identifying ways to integrate AI into your business was non-negotiable? And, I also said that if you weren’t sure where to start, then ask.

This week’s small move is a prompt to help you do that second part. Simply insert information relevant to your business, see what you get back and then continue the conversation with ChatGPT as your thought partner:

"I run a [type of business] offering [your product/service] to [your audience]. We use tools like [Tool 1], [Tool 2], and currently handle the following workflows manually:

– [Workflow 1] – ~[X] hours/week
– [Workflow 2] – ~[X] hours/week
– [Workflow 3] – ~[X] hours/week

I’m exploring how I can use AI to save time, reduce costs or improve areas like customer experience, internal operations, or marketing.

Please:

  1. Recommend 3–5 AI solutions I could implement starting this month.

  2. Prioritize them by estimated time savings, ease of implementation, and tool cost.

  3. For each, include:
    – Real-world examples (if available).
    – Estimated impact (time/money saved).
    – Suggested tools + a short rationale."

WHAT ROLE DO SMALL BUSINESSES PLAY IN THE ECONOMY FROM USA FACTS

TL;DR

May is National Small Business Month, so it seems appropriate to highlight data about how small businesses impact our economy. Read on to get…well, the facts.

Playful and purely for enjoyment.

Chocolatey gooey goodness

Sometimes, there’s really nothing better than a warm, soft, gooey chocolate chip cookie. Am I right?

I attended a dinner at Glasshaus in Nashville last week after a long day of events and networking. At the end, the staff brought out a tray of freshly baked (and warm) cookies that smelled too good for me to pass up. While I’m convinced they were meant for the coffee shop the next morning, the staff entertained my cravings and let me have one.

WOW, it was freaking delicious. Big bonus that it came from a cool local business.

What’s the best chocolate chip cookie you’ve ever eaten? Reply and let me know so I can add it to my list 🍪
